The Testimony of Scripture

Finally, for our purposes, it would be remiss not to mention the centrality of love to the Father - Son unity for which Jesus prayed for those who believe in his name (17:26). Love is what characterises the trinitarian relationship between the Father and the Son, between the Son and the world, and between the Father and the world. Earlier in the Gospel, Jesus had said ' By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (13:35). Failure to demonstrate such love to the world betrays or winess to nonbelievers.

On the other hand, the loving unity that should bind believers together in Jesus is precisely the testimony by which other realise God’s love for them.171

Jesus at the Centre

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.   Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot

Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

John 3:16-17 (NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him

John 3:16-17 (NIV)
